Rocket League is going free-to-play on September 23rd at 8 a.m. PT, according to a recent announcement from developer Psyonix.
Ahead of next week’s big change, an update will arrive on September 16th at 9 a.m. PT. The update will unlock cross-platform progression (as long as you have an Epic Games Account), Legacy status and items for players who already own the game, new quick chats, a new hitbox for the Merc van, a larger item pool for Trade Ups, and more. One thing that’s leaving the game is Solo Standard, but I doubt most players are really torn up about that.
Rocket League going free-to-play also marks Epic’s biggest influence on the game after acquiring Psyonix last year. Not only does the revamped challenge system seem to be influenced by Epic, but the “Llama-Rama” event that’s launching with free-to-play will unlock in-game rewards for Rocket League and Fortnite, according to the latter’s Twitter account.
In addition to making the game free-to-play, Psyonix is also dropping the PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online requirement for PS4 or Switch players respectively. Xbox players will still require an Xbox Live account.
