Spider-Man is coming to Marvel’s Avengers, but only for PlayStation players
PlayStation has confirmed that Spider-Man is coming to Marvel’s Avengers, and the web-slinging hero will only be available on its consoles.
Spider-Man will be a post-launch hero that’s coming to the game sometime in 2021. When he comes to the game, owners of the base game will gain access to him “at no additional cost.”
Sony obviously has a long-running relationship with the character, seeing as it owns the film rights to Spider-Man and published 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, as well as the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, both developed by the now Sony-owned Insomniac Games. PlayStation acquiring exclusivity rights to the character in the multiplatform Marvel’s Avengers—which is being developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix—ensures that the character remains in its gaming ecosystem, which was potentially part of the deal between Sony and Marvel Games when Insomniac decided they wanted to make a Spider-Man game.
PlayStation will also get access to the game’s beta before other platforms, as its players who have pre-ordered the game will be able to jump into the beta this weekend.
As for how the character will play, Crystal Dynamics associate art director Jeff Adams stated in a blog post that lead combat designer Vince Napoli “is hard at work making Spider-Man just as great on the sticks as he is on the page,” and “Spider-Man’s impressive acrobatic abilities will complement the experience, allowing you to seamlessly transition from navigation to combat.” Adams also stated that Spider-Man joining the Avengers gives him “complete access to the impressive technology available to the team, such as custom web shooter-based technology from Hank Pym, SHIELD, Stark Industries, and more.”
It appears that this game’s Spider-Man will be Peter Parker, as Adams references the Parker version of the hero multiple times in the blog post, as well as artists Steve Ditko and John Romita, Sr.’s designs of the character, webby armpits and all.
Spider-Man joins Hawkeye as Marvel’s Avengers confirmed post-launch heroes. The game is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia September 4th, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions launching later this year. Players who own the game on current-gen consoles will get a next-gen upgrade, but only within the same console family.
