Hogwarts Legacy delayed into 2022
Portkey Games has announced that Harry Potter RPG Hogwarts Legacy will now launch in 2022.
The game, which was officially revealed during Sony’s September 2020 PlayStation 5 showcase, was originally supposed to launch sometime in 2021. It is set before the Harry Potter books in the late 1800s and will cast players as a late-admittance Hogwarts student.
“Creating the best possible experience for all of the Wizarding World and gaming fans is paramount to us so we are giving the game the time it needs,” Portkey said in a statement on Twitter.
Portkey hasn’t stated whether this delay will impact the game’s initial plans to launch on last-gen consoles like Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It’s also set to release for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
It’s safe to assume that the challenges of developing a game during a global pandemic had something to do with the delay, though it’s possible that that’s not the entire story. Previous reports indicated that there was concern and anxiety at development studio Avalanche Software about the controversy surrounding transphobic statements from Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling not being addressed internally.
