EA confirms next Battlefield to launch in 2021, DICE is all hands on deck
Following the dual announcements that both Battlefield V and Star Wars Battlefront II are getting their final content updates over the next couple of months, EA confirmed that the studio that developed both games, DICE, is now going all-in on the next Battlefield game, which is confirmed for a 2021 release date.
According to a statement published by IGN, DICE “is focused on the future of Battlefield that we’ll be bringing to players in 2021.” Previously, the only confirmation we had for the next Battlefield’s release date was FY2022, which for EA is April 2021 to March 2022.
Following the sudden ending of Battlefield V‘s Tides of War live service content updates, players had been wondering what exactly DICE and EA had planned for the franchise. Though many fans expected the next game in the series to follow its predecessors and launch in October or November 2021, the uncertain direction the studio was taking and the current health crisis made players wonder if the next Battlefield game would be pushed to 2022.
While the shifting of DICE’s Battlefront II team to the next Battlefield game might annoy fans of the Star Wars franchise, it’s welcome news for Battlefield players, who have experienced a series of content droughts ever since Battlefield V launched. Spending five minutes on the game’s subreddit and forums will make it clear just how little trust certain members of the franchise’s fanbase have in DICE’s Battlefield team. It might also have to do with the fact that DICE LA, which long-supported DICE’s main studio in Sweden with DLC for the Battlefield series, was actually rebranded and given over to Respawn CEO Vince Zampella earlier this year.
