Take-Two might have just revealed Grand Theft Auto VI’s release window
Grand Theft Auto VI will be launching in FY2024, if a recent SEC filing by Rockstar parent company Take-Two is any indication.
According to Take-Two’s latest 10-K SEC filing (via VentureBeat), the company is anticipating a massive spike in marketing spend during FY2024, which lasts from April 1st, 2023 to March 31st, 2024. If history repeats itself, that means that Take-Two is gearing up for Rockstar’s next big release, which is undoubtedly Grand Theft Auto VI.
According to the filing, Take-Two is anticipating a marketing spend of $89.2 million, which is just about equal to the amount it anticipates spending in the next three fiscal years combined. The last time Take-Two committed to such a large marketing budget, Rockstar was launching Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, and the figures accurately predicted that game’s release window.
The announcement is somewhat bittersweet, as last year’s 10-K filing from Take-Two anticipated this marketing spike in FY2023, which could mean that Grand Theft Auto VI has been internally delayed a year. This could have something to do with the fact that Rockstar co-founder and its former VP of creativity Dan Houser left the company earlier this year, but it could also be due to a slower development cycle due to both the COVID-19 pandemic and Rockstar’s workplace culture reportedly shifting away from crunch. It could also be that Grand Theft Auto V is still selling like gangbusters, as it was the fifth best-selling game in North America this past April, over seven years after the game launched.
We still don’t know much about Grand Theft Auto VI beyond its assumed release window, but rumors have hinted at a return to Vice City with missions also taking place in South America. Considering the last two GTA titles have returned to updated versions of Liberty City and Los Santos respectively, it’s definitely not out of the realm of possibility that Vice City is the next one on the list.
