Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart gameplay trailer shows of 16 minutes of nonstop, next-gen action

PlayStation’s latest State of Play debuted an extended gameplay trailer for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and it’s about sixteen minutes of nonstop action that really shows off the power of the PS5.

Narrated by creative director Marcus Smith, the new gameplay trailer jumps back and forth between Clank—who has teamed up with the new playable Lombax, Rivet—and Ratchet as he searches for his metal buddy. Eventually, Ratchet finds himself in Nefarious City and, while he’s talking to his new weapons supplier, Ms. Zurkon, in Nefarious City Bazaar, sees Rivet and Clank running from the authorities. Before he knows it, they’re escaping the planet, and Ratchet needs to find a way to follow them.

The trailer showed off a bunch of Rift Apart‘s weapons, with a specific focus on how developer Insomniac Games has taken advantage of the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers. Many of the weapons, like the Burst Pistol and the Enforcer, have alternative fire modes that the player uses with half- and full-pulls of the triggers. The trailer also showed off the PS5’s SSD and how quickly it loads levels. At one point during a boss fight, Ratchet and the boss are instantly transported to a new planet. The wild part is that it isn’t just a small arena, but an entire level that the SSD is loading in instantly. Same goes for a Pocket Dimension that Rivet and Clank have to explore.

Besides the kind of combat and platforming you’d expect from a Ratchet & Clank title, the demo also gave quick snippets of different gameplay segments that veer from the formula. Open area exploration, Clank-specific puzzles, Glitch Challenges, Arena Challenges, and aerial combat were all on display in the trailer.
