Kojima reveals the star of his next game, teases more to come
Hideo Kojima has confirmed that Elle Fanning will star in his next game—along with a tease for another big reveal about the mystery project.
Having previously teased the actress in a silhouetted image, Kojima confirmed her role by tweeting a new image where her face is clearly visible. To make sure there’s no room for confusion, the new image also includes some added text along the side: “A Hideo Kojima Game X Elle Fanning.”
The director’s tweet also added a new image to the set, switching the main text from “Who am I?” to “Where am I?”
The accompanying text indicates that this slow burn reveal will continue at a future gaming event—the first image came out during the Tokyo Game Show, and this latest update coincides with PAX Australia. So we’re likely to get an answer to the where of the new game before too long, perhaps with another question to keep the chain going. For now, though, we have confirmation that it is a game, and that Fanning will play a prominent role.
The 24-year-old Fanning has starred in a number of high-profile films, including Super 8 and The Neon Demon. She joins a long list of Kojima’s Hollywood-connected collaborators that includes Norman Reedus, Kiefer Sutherland, Guillermo del Toro, and (Neon Demon director) Nicolas Winding Refn.
Now, there’s no hard evidence what this game will be just yet. But rumors and leaks have pointed to a horror project called Overdose, and that game may be the Xbox exclusive he’s working on with Microsoft. Still, that’s very much all up in the air. Kojima Productions continues to work with PlayStation, too, and the studio is also experimenting with virtual reality (though it’s not officially working on a VR game just yet).
As for when we can get our next tease? The natural spot for that is, of course, The Game Awards, given Kojima’s close relationship with the show’s organizer, Geoff Keighley. The Game Awards will broadcast December 8th, 2022, so Kojima diehards will probably want to tune in then.
