Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 trailer shows off Gunsmith 2.0
Infinity Ward is streamlining how weapon progression works in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 with its Gunsmith 2.0 system and Weapon Vaults.
In the previous Call of Duty titles, players would have to unlock attachments for each weapon in the game. However, in Modern Warfare 2, attachments can be unlocked on a single weapon and shared between other weapons within the same platform.
To achieve this, the upcoming game has introduced a new type of customization option to the Gunsmith known as a Receiver. The Reciever acts as a base for the weapon and any attachments unlocked for it can be shared between all Receivers in the Weapon Platform.
As an example, the first Weapon Platform unlocked is for Tempus Armament’s M4. By progressing through this Weapon Platform, players can unlock Receivers for the M16, the 556 Icarus LMG, the FTac Racon Battle Rifle, and FSS Hurricane SMG. Any of these weapons will be able to use all of the attachments unlocked for the M4.
There are also attachments in a weapon’s progression track that can be used on all weapons, regardless of Weapon Platform, such as the SZ Reflex Optic and the Echoline GS-X Suppressor Muzzle attachment.
Infinity Ward notes that while some Weapon Platforms contain four or five Receivers to share attachments between, some only contain one, such as the RPG-7 and Lockwood MK2.
In addition to the improvements to Gunsmith, Infinity Ward is introducing Weapon Vaults with Modern Warfare 2. Weapon Vaults are described as the “Ultimate Weapon Blueprint” and contain “dozens of platform-native attachments from an alternate manufacturer.”
“All Weapon Vault attachments are hand-crafted to with a specific cosmetic appearance in mind,” Infinity Ward explains. “Weapon Vaults are designed for those who care about appearance just as much as effectiveness, especially for a specific Weapons Platform.”
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches October 28th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
