Bluepoint Games joins PlayStation Studios
Bluepoint Games, the studio behind the PlayStation 5 Demon’s Souls remake is now officially a part of PlayStation Studios.
“We’re thrilled to have officially joined PlayStation Studios!,” said Bluepoint president Marco Thrush in a statement on the PlayStation Blog announcing the acquisition. “Becoming a part of PlayStation Studios, empowers our team to raise the quality-bar even further and create even more impactful experiences for the PlayStation community.”
Though the purchase had been widely anticipated for months, the announcement did include a major surprise. Bluepoint’s historic relationship with PlayStation has focused almost exclusively on remakes, remasters, and ports—but that’s about to change. The studio’s next project will actually be an original title, according to a newly published interview with IGN. “Our next project, we’re working on original content right now. We can’t talk about what that is, but that’s the next step in the evolution for us,” Thrush revealed.
While Sony’s PlayStation division hasn’t made as many high-profile acquisitions as its chief rival, Microsoft’s Xbox, the company has been on a buying spree lately. In July, PlayStation Studios acquired Returnal developer Housemarque and PC port specialists Nixxes, and earlier this month added The Playroom VR studio Firesprite.
There may be more to come, as well. PlayStation Studios head Hulst told IGN that the company isn’t ruling out future acquisitions, as long as they make sense.
“We are open always to building new relationships or bringing people in-house, but only if we adhere to the quality-first mentality and the right kind of innovative content, new experiences, diverse experiences,” Hulst said.
