Battlefield 2042 now offering another cross-gen option for players
Battlefield 2042‘s Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 digital standard editions will now include both last-gen and current-gen versions of the game, community manager Adam Freeman announced on Twitter.
Players on last-gen consoles who are planning on making the move to current-gen hardware within the same console family (Xbox One to Series X/S or PlayStation 4 to PS5) now have a new option to purchase the cross-gen bundle. Previously, that option was only available in 2042‘s Gold and Ultimate editions.
“We realize that for many, next gen hardware is still hard to come by,” Freeman wrote in a blog post announcing the change. “We want as many Battlefield fans as possible to start the journey with us on day one, and we want to give those players the peace of mind that their progress carries over if they get a new system this holiday season, or beyond.”
An accompanying FAQ section to the blog post showed that there are a couple of caveats to this change. The physical standard edition on Series X/S and PS5 does not include the cross-gen bundle. Likewise, players who purchase the standard edition on Xbox One and PS4 do not get access to the Series X/S and PS5 version. Finally, you can not jump from Xbox to PlayStation or vice versa with the cross-gen bundle. The offer only applies when you upgrade within the same console family.
While both the last-gen and current-gen versions of the game offer most of the same features, modes, gameplay mechanics, there are several key differences. The main difference is that servers on last-gen versions of the game are capped at 64 players. Current-gen consoles and PC servers can accommodate 128 players. The maps in the last-gen versions will also offer smaller playable areas.
Early access to Battlefield 2042‘s open beta begins October 6th. Everyone else can jump in on October 8th. The open beta ends on October 9th.
Battlefield 2042 launches November 19th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
