Activision reveals Call of Duty: Vanguard, talks changes for Warzone

Following the Battle of Verdansk event in Call of Duty: Warzone, we’ve now received the official reveal for the next major chapter of the Call of Duty franchise.

“Players will turn the tides of war to experience World War II like never before in Call of Duty: Vanguard,” the press release for the game reads. “Alongside a seamlessly integrated, new Warzone experience coming later this year, the massive amount of Call of Duty content will provide players an unrivaled offering.”

According to the game’s official blog, Vanguard‘s campaign will follow four different soldiers, each from a different nation and fighting in a different part of the war. Those characters will be:

  • Private Lucas Riggs, 20th Battalion, Australian 9th Infantry Division, British Eighth Army
  • Sergeant Arthur Kingsley of the 9th Parachute Battalion, British Army
  • Lieutenant Wade Jackson, Scouting Squadron Six, United States Navy
  • Lieutenant Polina Petrova of the 138th Rifle Division, Red Army

“This incredible campaign spans four major theaters of World War II in a unified single-player narrative, as you prepare to do your part to change the fate of humanity,” the blog post reads. The four locations that will serve as the focus of the story will be the Eastern and Western fronts of Europe, the Pacific, and North Africa.

Along with the campaign, Call of Duty: Vanguard will offer a multiplayer mode with 20 maps at launch, including “16 built for core gameplay.”

“Sledgehammer Games is bringing the fast-paced tactical first-person combat and further innovating it with many more ways to play,” the post continues. “These include an advanced Gunsmith and Caliber system that brings immersive and reactive environments to a new level, and the next generation of the seminal 2v2 Gunfight mode first introduced in Modern Warfare; Champion Hill. Imagine quick-action, close-quarters, small-squad combat in which eight teams compete in a series of head-to-head matchups where the last team standing wins.”

In addition to the standard multiplayer offerings, Call of Duty: Vanguard will also include a Zombies mode crafted in conjunction with Treyarch Studios. In this latest iteration of Zombies, fans “will experience a signature undead gameplay experience, marking a franchise-first Zombies crossover for Call of Duty” according to Activision. As a part of that, Sledgehammer explains that the cooperative mode “continues and intertwines” with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s Dark Aether story “to create deeply engaging lore, all while innovating on the core gameplay that the mode is famous for.”

In addition, changes will be coming to Call of Duty: Warzone as well, Later this year, the battle royale will receive a totally new map, along with “new gameplay and new experiences,” and a new anti-cheat system on the PC version.
