Grand Theft Auto VI is in ‘active development’
Now that the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 upgrade for Grand Theft Auto V has a release date, it appears Rockstar is ready to start talking about the next game in its storied, crime-filled franchise.
According to a recent tweet, Grand Theft Auto VI is now officially in “active development.”
Unfortunately, that’s all the information that Rockstar is willing to share at this time. Hopefully that means production has started, as Rockstar stated that development is not just “underway” but “well underway,” according to a separate statement published on its blog.
In the same statement, Rockstar attributed the longer-than-usual wait time for Grand Theft Auto VI to the “unprecedented longevity of GTAV.” Since the game originally debuted on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2013, it has sold 155 million copies as of November 2021. Keep in mind that doesn’t include the current-gen upgraded versions that are launching on March 15th.
As for when Grand Theft Auto VI will launch, the most recent rumors put it in a 2024 or 2025 release window. Those rumors also stated that the game would return the franchise to Vice City, though in the modern era, and feature multiple playable characters once again, including a woman for the first time in franchise history.
