PlayStation is buying Destiny studio Bungie
Fresh off the heels of Xbox’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, PlayStation has announced its own acquisition: Destiny studio Bungie.
According to an announcement from Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan, “Bungie will remain an independent and multi-platform studio and publisher.” That being said, PlayStation is “excited about the opportunities for synergies and collaboration between” Bungie and PlayStation Studios.
That sounds like Destiny 2 and subsequent Destiny releases will remain on Xbox and PC for now. Bungie CEO Pete Parsons said in a statement that Bungie’s games “will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.” Likewise, Ryan stated that “Bungie’s world-class expertise in multi-platform development and live game services will help us deliver on our vision of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers.”
That being said, it’s hard to believe that Sony won’t want a PlayStation exclusive Bungie game. Bloomberg has reported the acquisition deal costing Sony $3.6 billion, and you don’t throw down that kind of dough without getting something exclusive out of it.
However, one way that Sony could capitalize is by looking outside of the gaming sphere and expanding Destiny into TV and movies. Parsons said that “Sony believes that game worlds are only the beginning of what our IPs can become” and that this is the first step to Bungie becoming a “global multi-media entertainment company.”
Sony might also not be done buying studios. GamesIndustry.biz’s Christopher Dring tweeted that Ryan “told me ‘we should expect more’ when it comes to further PlayStation acquisitions.”
Amidst all that, Destiny 2 is still launching its next major expansion very soon. The Witch Queen launches on February 22nd for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia.
