The Biggest Games of 2023 – The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Platforms: Switch
Release Date: 05.12.23

The sequel to 2017’s revolutionary The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild might not have launched last year like Nintendo originally promised, but we’re confident that 2023 will finally be the year that we get to play the most anticipated title coming to the Switch.

First off, Nintendo announced its subtitle. After years of referring to it simply as “The Sequel to Breath of the Wild,” we now know it’s called The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Given the ruinous state of Hyrule as seen in the game’s trailers, the title makes perfect sense.

As for what will actually be in the game when it launches, Nintendo has been particularly hush-hush, but we can make some educated guesses based on what we’ve seen so far. Obviously, Link will once again have to rescue Zelda from a Calamitous baddie, but we’re pretty sure it’s someone other than Ganon this time around.

Tears of the Kingdom also looks to build on the open-world mechanics that Breath of the Wild introduced to the series, including the abilities to climb and glide, and the controversial weapon degradation system. This time, we’re expecting even more ways to traverse the world vertically, as much of what we’ve seen of the game takes place on floating islands high above Hyrule. Link will also have a host of new abilities that are evolutions of his old Sheikah Slate powers and access to some sort of flying machine.

Lastly, we have a firm release date: May 12th, 2023. We’re holding you to it, Nintendo!
