Storage upgrades finally coming to PS5, may require higher fan speeds

The ability to upgrade the storage in your PlayStation 5 that is quickly filling up with games is finally set to arrive this summer.

According to a new article on Bloomberg, Sony will be “lifting a bottleneck” that was getting in the way of making the upgrade in the coming months. The ability to add in additional M.2 SSD storage will be unlocked by a firmware update, which will also open up the option for Sony to run the PS5’s internal cooling fan at higher speeds.

That second feature will actually be a requirement for the first, as adding additional storage to the PS5 would cause the console’s internal temperature to get too hot according to Bloomberg’s sources.

So, if you’re looking to give your PlayStation 5 more internal storage, you’ll potentially need to be ready to deal with more fan noise—how much more, however, remains to be seen.
