Square Enix reveals Guardians of the Galaxy, out this fall (update: also on Switch!)

Update: During its E3 2021 Direct presentation, Nintendo revealed that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will also come to Switch on October 26th. For the moment, it’s unclear whether the game will run natively or through the cloud, as some high-end games ported to the system do.

Original story: To kick off its E3 2021 showcase, Square Enix revealed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, a single-player, third-person action take on the characters from Eidos Montreal.

You’ll play as Star-Lord, accompanied on your adventure by Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. This version fo the team is relatively new, having been together for about a year, so you can expect sparks to fly between the crew.

The reveal trailer also included some other familiar faces from the franchise, like Mantis and Cosmo the Space Dog.

Alongside the new trailer, Square Enix also debuted a deep dive video featuring commentary from the develoeprs and some of the original comic writers.

Finally—and perhaps most excitingly—Square showed off several minutes of gameplay in which the Guardians head down to a planet surface in the midst of lightning storms to storm the castle of one Lady Hellbender. The combat is on full display, as is the banter between the team and the ability to make binary choices that appear to affect your relationship with your fellow Guardians.

Particularly neat is the way licensed classic rock music kicks up during combat when you activate a special “Huddle” ability, bringing in some of musical the flair of James Gunn’s MCU adaptation. In this case, it’s “Bad Reputation” by Joan Jett, but Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero” also features prominently in the trailers. The soundtrack definitely looks to be a highlight.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will launch October 26th, 2021, on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and Windows PC.
