Sonic Superstars: Make New Foes, but Keep the Old
Sonic Superstars wouldn’t be a proper Sonic game if the blue blur’s longtime nemesis Dr. Eggman wasn’t back to stir up some kind of trouble. This time, however, that bloated boffin teams up with two other troublemakers—one from Sonic’s past, and one new to the series.
Up first is Fang the Sniper, who originally debuted in Sonic Triple Trouble on the Sega Game Gear. While Fang had an unofficial cameo in Sonic Mania ( it wasn’t really him, but someone transformed to look like him), his last proper appearance was way back in 1996’s Sonic the Fighters.
“When we released Sonic Mania Plus, we brought back Might and Ray from the classic series, and our fans really appreciated getting to experience those characters again,” Sonic Team’s chief creative officer, Takashi Iizuka, explained when we asked about the unexpected return of Fang. “So, when we thought about modernizing this new game experience, we knew we needed to bring back some classic series characters for our fans to enjoy.”
On the complete other end of the spectrum, Sonic Superstars also serves as the debut of Trip the Sungazer, a mysterious new character based around the sungazer lizard. We know that she’s clad in robotic-looking armor and employed as a guide for Dr. Eggman and Fang as they travel throughout the Northstar Islands, but to find out more about her and her intentions, you’ll have to play the game.
