Sonic Origins is bringing back four classic games this summer
Sega has announced a new remastered collection that brings four iconic Sonic the Hedgehog games to modern consoles. Sonic Origins, out this summer, collects Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD in one package, along with some gameplay upgrades and bonus content.
This isn’t the first time Sega has rereleased old Sonic titles, but it does mark the first official port of Sonic CD since way back in 2011.
Origins features two main modes: Classic and Anniversary. The former will directly replicate the experience of playing the original games, complete with the old 4:3 aspect ratio. Anniversary mode, however, expands the picture to fill the whole screen and offers up infinite lives. One big change to both modes, however, is that you’ll be able to play through every single game as Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles.
The collection also adds in optional missions to each game that reward you with coins to spend in the in-game museum.
A bit confusingly, there are two different versions of the game, one standard and one digital deluxe, up for pre-order, at $40 and $45, respectively. The more expensive package grants access to “Hard Missions,” additional music tracks from some non-playable Sonic titles, and a few other minor features.
There are also pre-order bonuses you’ll get if you plunk down money for either version ahead of launch. These include 100 bonus coins for the museum and a Mirror Mode unlocked from the start.
You can look at the full chart on the official site to sort it all out, but the short answer is that pre-ordering the expensive version will get you access to all the content. Of course.
Sonic Origins will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC on June 23rd.
