Respawn set to work on three new Star Wars games
Electronic Arts has announced that Titanfall and Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment is developing three new Star Wars games.
According to a press release from EA, Vince Zampella—who recently took over as director of the Battlefield franchise—will “oversee this new phase of EA’s relationship with Lucasfilm, building on Respawn’s award-winning history in game development and expertise in telling compelling Star Wars stories.”
As for what the games will be, one of them will be the next game in the Star Wars Jedi series, which Respawn kicked off in 2019 with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. That game’s director, Stig Asmussen, will once again head development on the new Jedi chapter.
The second title is a first-person shooter directed by Peter Hirschmann. For those who don’t know, Hirschmann has an incredibly long history with Star Wars games, having worked as a producer on the original two Star Wars: Battlefront titles as well as the Force Unleashed. Hirschmann’s career came full-circle recently: Having started as a producer on the original Medal of Honor games, he returned to the franchise with 2020’s Oscar-winning Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.
“Working with Lucasfilm Games on a new FPS in the Star Wars galaxy is a dream come true for me, as this is a story I have always wanted to tell,” Hirschmann said.
Last but not least is a new strategy game “developed through a production collaboration between Respawn and Bit Reactor” and led by Greg Foertsch. The founding of Bit Reactor, led by former XCOM developers from Firaxis, was announced less than a week ago, just in time for EA’s reveal. Foertsch was formerly Firaxis’ art developer before co-founding Bit Reactor.
There’s no release window for any of these titles. While we can safely assume that the next Star Wars Jedi game is a sequel to Fallen Order, we don’t know what the other two are. Hirschmann has previously expressed his love of the late ’90s Dark Forces games, but we’re also waiting to see if EA plans to release Star Wars Battlefront III.
