New trailer for Returnal shows more of its ever-changing world
For me, one of the most interesting of the PlayStation 5’s upcoming exclusives is Returnal, the latest project from developer Housemarque—a name I know from their utterly fantastic line of retro arcade-inspired earlier titles.
Returnal, however, will be very different from those smaller-scale score chasers. The team has designed the game as a more ambitious third-person shooter that unfolds in a procedurally-generated alien landscape.
“Through relentless roguelike gameplay, you’ll discover that just as the planet changes with every cycle, so do the items at your disposal,” reads Returnal‘s description on its official PlayStation page. “Every loop offers new combinations, forcing you to push your boundaries and approach combat with a different strategy each time.”
It’s those loops that serve as the focus of “Atropos,” the latest trailer for the game. In it, we see main character Selene exploring various locations across the planet, and then listen as she reacts with shock to those places changing drastically from what she knew them to be before.
How everything will come together into a full gaming experience is still a bit of a mystery, but I’m definitely excited to find out. Returnal launches on the PlayStation 5 on April 30th.
