NetherRealm working on next-gen versions of Mortal Kombat and Injustice
While it’s not exactly a shocking revelation, a new job posting on the WB Games career website pretty much confirms that next-generation versions of NetherRealm’s two biggest fighting game franchises are in the works.
“NetherRealm, a division of WB Games Inc., seeks a Principal Software Engineer – Graphics to drive the next generation console graphics vision for the Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises,” opens the job posting. “As a Principal Graphics Engineer you will work closely with the Lead Engineer and the rest of your peers to develop state-of-the-art graphics technology for the PS5, and XBOX Series X. Your domain will span the entire rendering pipeline and your responsibilities will include optimization, design, and implementation of pivotal new graphics technology.”
Although we get the obvious mention of next-generation versions of Mortal Kombat and Injustice, there is another point of interest here in the posting: the mention of implementing “pivotal new graphics technology.”
Sure, some people may not necessarily think of fighting games first when it comes to what genres can benefit the most from graphical upgrades, fighting games have long found ways to push hardware no matter be them 2D or 3D. With the possibilities of far higher resolutions, more stable framerates, new lighting techniques thanks to ray tracing, and more, next-gen fighters sure could be a sight to behold.
