Cyberpunk 2077’s reveals first major expansion, not on last-gen
CD Projekt Red has unveiled the title and a brief teaser for Cyberpunk 2077‘s first major story expansion, Phantom Liberty.
Posited as a “spy-thriller expansion,” Phantom Liberty will feature Keanu Reeves returning in his role as Johnny Silverhand, as well as a brand-new Night City district for players to explore. The teaser features a voice over of V taking an oath to serve the New United States of America while images of the old order burning play.
It’s all very cool and dramatic, but there’s a catch: Phantom Liberty will not come to the last-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077. The ending of the teaser trailer only lists Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Stadia as the platforms for Phantom Liberty. The expansion will launch in 2023.
Likewise, according to the most recent episode of Night City Wire, the upcoming Update 1.6 will be the final update for the last-gen version of the game. This update—which launches today, September 6th—adds the ability to transmog clothing to keep their stats but change their style, Ripperdoc cosmetic surgery, and a playable arcade cabinet that can be found throughout Night City. Roach Race is the name of the arcade game, inspired by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and it’s also launching as a standalone mobile game. Nibbles the cat will also make their way to photo mode with 1.6.
Future updates, which will focus on overhauling the cop system and vehicle-to-vehicle combat, will not be coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
The Night City Wire episode also debuted a brand-new “NSFW” trailer for the upcoming Netflix-produced anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which serves as the inspiration for some of 1.6’s cosmetics.
