Meet the PlayStation 5—both of them
As Sony Interactive Entertainment’s special “The Future of Gaming” presentation came to a close today, the showcase of upcoming PlayStation 5 games was capped off by the reveal of the console itself.
And—boy is it something. What “something” means specifically will depend on your personal tastes, as the PlayStation 5’s design is a striking decision that’s unlike any other console before it. The previously-revealed DualSense controller was definitely a hint as to what the console would end up looking like, but we’re not sure anyone would have guessed this.
One especially interesting aspect about the PlayStation 5’s design is that there will be two different versions of it: one with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive, and another that’s focused totally on digital downloads. However, unlike other consoles that have simply blocked off the area where the drive would usually be, the PS5 actually sheds some of its body with the loss of disc support.
In addition to the console itself, Sony also revealed a number of accessories: a DualSense charging station, HD camera, Pulse 3D wireless headset, and media remote.
“With PlayStation 5, we are making a significant leap to deliver a truly new generation of transformative play experiences that will redefine expectations for what games can be,” said president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan as part of the announcements. “Worlds will be richer and more beautiful, they’ll captivate your senses in ways you didn’t think possible, and you’ll be able to experience them much more seamlessly, with lightning fast loading. Today’s showcase is just a glimpse of what’s to come in the next generation, and we want to thank our community for taking this journey to PS5’s launch with us.”
Now that we know what the PlayStation 5 will look like, and some of the games we can expect to play on it this year, two big questions linger: when exactly is the console coming, and how much will it cost?
For now, we’ll have to just wonder and wait for those answers.
