PlayStation 5 consoles to see limited numbers in 2020 according to report

If a new report published last night by Bloomberg is true, Sony is planning to limit the number of PlayStation 5 consoles available in 2020.

According to the article, Sony will be looking to only produce 5 to 6 million PS5 units by the end of its fiscal year in March 2021, which would be a reduction from the 7.5 million PlayStation 4s the company sold in a similar timeframe during its launch.

The reason? According to insiders Bloomberg spoke with, it all comes down to price. Like Microsoft, Sony is pushing to create a more ambitious next-generation console, and the company is worried about trying to sell high-priced new hardware in the current economic climate. As well, with everything going on in the world right now, it’s possible that Sony (and potentially Microsoft as well) are looking at higher prices on the components they need than originally expected.

Bloomber’s article continues on that, at least for now, Sony may be looking to put more emphasis behind pushing the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro as alternatives to jumping in right away to a more expensive PS5. That switch in focus might also be a side effect of Sony’s reduced ability to promote its next-generation console, as PR teams are unable to travel and major events like E3 have been cancelled.

As of now, at least, neither the PlayStation 5 nor Xbox Series X have been delayed from their expected late 2020 launches. If you’re someone who wants to get one (or both) this year, however, you might be better off pre-ordering as soon as that ability is made available.
