You no longer need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play free-to-play games
It’s official: Xbox has removed the requirement to have an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play free-to-play online multiplayer games like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone on Xbox consoles.
Xbox announced the policy change after a failed attempt at raising the price of Xbox Live Gold back in January. Alpha Insiders have been testing the change for a several weeks. However, it was just last week that the change went live for all Insiders, so it’s somewhat surprising that Xbox was able to roll it out to all users so quickly.
In the announcement, Xbox included a list of more than 50 free-to-play games currently available on its Xbox One and Series X/S console. These include the obvious battle royale juggernauts, as well as Destiny 2, the recently released next-gen World War II shooter Enlisted, as well as non-battle royale juggernauts like Rocket League, World of Tanks, and Warframe.
