Sega working on live-action Yakuza adaptation

After the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, Japanese game developer Sega is said to be working on a second live-action adaptation—this time based on the company’s beloved Yakuza franchise.

According to Variety, Sega will be partnering with 1212 Entertainment (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) and Wild Sheep Content (a newer production company run by former Netflix executive Erik Barmack).

“The saga of Kazuma Kiryu has a built-in cinematic appeal – a mix of kinetic action with bursts of comedy, multiple converging storylines, and a gripping journey towards redemption,” 1212 Entertainment told Variety.

While no details about the live-action adaptation are really known yet, it’s pretty easy to assume it’ll follow infamous yakuza member Kazuma Kiryu as he sets off on some combination of fighting, uniting, joining, leaving, and/or destroying Japan’s criminal underworld.

We also don’t seem to know yet if the adaptation will be a movie or TV series, but the Yakuza mythos definitely seems better suited to something more longer-form.
