Team up against demons in Ghost of Tsushima’s upcoming multiplayer mode
Of all of the potential DLC and expansions I expected for Ghost of Tsushima after reviewing it, a co-op multiplayer mode about slaughtering Japanese mythological monsters was never on my list. And yet, here we are.
Announced this morning, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends will be a free download for all owners of the main game on PlayStation 4.
“Legends is an entirely new experience — it’s a separate mode that doesn’t follow Jin or the companions from his journey, but instead focuses on four warriors who have been built up as legends in stories told by the people of Tsushima,” explains senior game designer Darren Bridges. “Ghost of Tsushima’s single-player campaign focuses on an open world and exploring the natural beauty of the island, but Legends is haunting and fantastical, with locations and enemies inspired by Japanese folk tales and mythology and an emphasis on cooperative combat and action.”
In Legends, you’ll find others to form 2-4 player teams, with each participant able to pick from four different classes: Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, or Assassin. As with any game of this type, each class will have their own strengths and weaknesses. While it’s pretty easy to assume some of them—like, say, the Hunter being good at ranged attacks—the full skill roster has yet to be announced.
One interesting twist is that it seems as if the amount of players you have will determine what kind of game you play. As Bridges explains, with two players, “you’ll be able to play a series of co-op Story missions that escalate in difficulty, building on the foundation of combat from the single-player campaign but with new magical twists that often require careful synchronization with your partner.”
Meanwhile, when you’ve got more teammates, “you’ll be able to take on wave-based Survival missions, fighting groups of the toughest enemies Tsushima has to offer, Including new Oni enemies with supernatural abilities.”
Ghost of Tsushima: Legends hits this fall. While the expansion is free, you’ll need a PlayStation Plus subscription in order to play online.
