Sony confirms that it’s working on upgraded PSVR for PlayStation 5

Sony has officially confirmed that it’s working on an upgraded PlayStation VR for the PS5, but don’t expect it to launch this year.

In a statement on PlayStation’s official blog, platforming planning and management senior VP Hideaki Nishino that a “next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5.” The new VR system will come with major hardware and quality-of-life enhancements, including higher resolution, wider field of view, and an easy-to-use single-cord connection to the PS5.

The next PSVR system will also come with a new controller that “will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller,” Nishino wrote, “along with a focus on great ergonomics.” The DualSense is known for its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, so it’s possible that new PSVR controllers will include these features.

The bad news is that the next PSVR won’t be ready for a 2021 launch. “There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system,” Nishino stated. Likewise, no games were announced, though it’s likely that Gran Turismo 7, which was recently delayed into 2022, will have a VR mode.

In the meantime, you can still use the current PSVR on the PS5, notably with Hitman 3‘s new VR mode, as well as all the other titles currently on that platform.
