Grand Theft Auto Online’s next Heist to be set on an entirely new island

Rockstar Games has unveiled the next Heist for Grand Theft Auto Online, and this time players will be infiltrating an entirely new island map.

The Cayo Perico Heist will task players with infiltrating a “remote island compound of the world’s most notorious drug dealer” and “escape with valuable evidence along with as much art, gold and drug money as you can carry.” The Heist can be completed solo or as part of a four-player crew.

While there were no details about the size of the island itself, it seems fairly substantial, as players can explore the island and “experience new social spaces to dance and party in.” Rockstar has even added 100 new songs and new radio stations for you to listen to while cruising around Cayo Perico.

Notably, the trailer also shows off a “very large, very versatile, and very heavily armed submarine HQ.” That seems to be how players will both get onto the island from Los Santos and where they will plan the heist.

The Cayo Perico Heist will launch on December 15th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and on Xbox Series X and S and PlayStation 5 via backward compatibility.

Perhaps coincidentally, Cayo Perico sounds suspiciously like previously floated rumors about Grand Theft Auto VI. Those rumors suggested that the next mainline entry in the series will take place in both Vice City as well as an unnamed South American country. Though it’s unclear exactly where Cayo Perico is located, its tropical atmosphere is certainly reminiscent of Central or South America.

Given the massive size of this update, were the rumors mistaking this heist for a possible Grand Theft Auto VI location? Or is Cayo Perico somehow a hint at what’s to come next for the series? If our best guess is true, we probably won’t find out for at least a couple of years.
