Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold Wars shows off its first campaign gameplay
Treyarch revealed the first campaign gameplay for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, captured on a PlayStation 5, debuting some interesting new mechanics.
Taking place on an airfield at night, the mission requires players to confirm a VIP target and then assassinate him. In a sniper moment reminiscent of one of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare‘s most iconic missions, the bullet misses the target and hits a nearby guard, kicking off a shootout.
That’s where things get really interesting and several new mechanics are revealed. The first is the ability to use enemies as human shields in the middle of a firefight. You can either eliminate the target or use them for extra protection. You can also perform brutal melee takedowns.
The other seemingly new mechanic is the ability to slow down time when taking a sniper shot. As the VIP is escaping on a cargo plane, the team gets in a jeep and tries to catch up to him. At one point, the player tries to snipe a target inside the cargo plane, gets out a sniper rifle, aims down the sight, and time slows down so that they can line up their shot. It’s unclear if this is a mechanic that can be used whenever, if it’s limited to sniper rifles, or if it was just for the sake of this trailer.
There was also an explosive RC car that can somehow go faster than actual cars, so that was neat.
Beyond the campaign gameplay, Treyarch also revealed that PlayStation 4 players who pre-order the game will be able to jump into the Cold War multiplayer alpha this weekend. Pre-loading begins tomorrow.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 13th. Next-gen versions are also in the works.
